Ivan Kalmar is a Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Toronto. His research spans Central and Western Europe, focusing on populism, Islamophobia, antisemitism, and the interplay of race, nation, and religion in Western cultural history.

- Author of Early Orientalism: Imagined Islam and the Notion of Sublime Power (2012)
- Authored White But Not Quite: Central Europe’s Populist Revolt (2022)
His recent work examines illiberalism in Europe, analyzing the spread of Islamophobic and antisemitic ideologies through digital platforms. He has edited special issues on Islamophobia in Germany: East/West (2020) and Race and Racialization in Eastern Europe (2022). Kalmar’s research connects historical Orientalist traditions with contemporary populist movements, emphasizing how racial and religious identities are constructed and contested.
Current projects include comparative studies of East/West divisions within Germany and post-communist EU states, while maintaining a focus on the mythology of the computer and its implications for modern identity formation.
