Iva Tzvetanova is an Assistant Professor of Pharmacology at the European University Cyprus (EUC), affiliated with the School of Medicine and Department of Pharmacology. She holds a PhD in Molecular and Cellular Pharmacology from Stony Brook University (USA) and conducted postdoctoral research at the Max Planck Institute in Germany. Her research focuses on neurobiology, glial cell biology, and myelin-related disorders, with contributions to understanding axonal energy metabolism and oligodendrocyte functions.
Education: B.Sc. in Chemistry and Molecular & Cellular Pharmacology (Stony Brook University, 2003); Ph.D. in Molecular & Cellular Pharmacology (Stony Brook University, 2010); Postdoctoral Fellowship in Neurogenetics (Max Planck Institute, 2011–present).
Research interests include neurodegenerative diseases, myelin structure-function relationships, and glial cell signaling. Her work bridges pharmacology and neuroscience, with recent studies on antibiotic development and ALS pathophysiology. She has published widely on topics like SFK-AMPK signaling, HIF1 alpha regulation, and axo-vascular coupling mechanisms.
Notable awards include the Van der Kloot Award for Excellence in Teaching (2007) and multiple travel grants from neurochemistry and myelin conferences. Her research has implications for therapeutic strategies targeting glial dysfunction and neurodegenerative disorders.
