University of Exeterمعرفی
Dr. István T Kristó-Nagy serves as Senior Lecturer at the University of Exeter's Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies and has directed the Centre for the Study of Islam since September 2022. He joined Exeter in 2010 through the Legitimate and Illegitimate Violence in Islamic Thought (LIVIT) project, transitioning to a lectureship in 2013 and senior lectureship in 2018 after prior fellowships at UC Berkeley and Oxford.
His educational background includes:
- MA in History and Arabic from Pázmány Péter Catholic University (2000)
- PhD in Arabic Studies from Eötvös Lóránd University and Université de Toulouse 2 (2006)
Dr. Kristó-Nagy's research integrates comparative analysis of Islamic civilization with evolutionary approaches across humanities and natural sciences. He examines social structures' impact on individual potential through studies of Arabic adab evolution, Islamic political thought, and wisdom literature. His work on early Abbasid inquisitions against Zanādiqa communities and Iblīs symbolism reveals intersections between religious authority, violence, and individualism, while his broader framework connects ethics to biological and geographical determinants.
His notable distinctions include:
- Sultan Post Doctoral Fellowship (UC Berkeley)
- Mellon Career Development Fellowship (Oxford)
- Mellon Research Fellowship (Madrid)
- Multiple international scholarships across Europe and the Middle East
As an active supervisor, he has guided three PhD completions and currently mentors three doctoral candidates in Abbasid culture and comparative Islamic studies. His leadership in the LIVIT project generated foundational publications on Islamic violence historiography, and as director of the Centre for the Study of Islam, he advances interdisciplinary research bridging humanities with scientific methodologies.
