István Szabó

Professor István Szabó is a distinguished Hungarian theologian serving as Vice-Rector and Head of the Department of Regular Theology at Károli Gáspár Reformed University Faculty of Theology in Budapest. Born in Sárbogárd in 1956, he has dedicated his career to theological scholarship and church leadership, also serving as a Bishop in the Reformed Church of Hungary.

His educational background includes theological studies at Budapest Reformed Theological Academy (1976-1981), postgraduate studies at McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago (1982-1983), a doctoral degree from KRE HTK (1994), and Habilitation at Evangelical University of Theology (2002).

Professor Szabó's research focuses on systematic theology, history of dogma, 16th century Reformation, ecology and theology, and political history. His scholarly work demonstrates deep engagement with Calvinist theology while addressing contemporary theological and social issues. His publications reveal particular interest in the intersection of faith and public life, biblical interpretation, and the historical development of Reformed thought in Hungary.

His recent publications show continued scholarly productivity, with works addressing digital worship practices, historical sermons, divine providence, prayer theology, and Calvinist rhetoric. His ongoing work includes translating theological works, editing Calvin's writings, and maintaining active pastoral engagement through regular sermons documented as recently as 2024.
