Issa Panahi is a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Affiliate Professor of Bioengineering at the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD). He joined UTD in 2001 after 18 years in industry and research. His research focuses on digital signal processing for biomedical applications, including hearing aids, noise cancellation, and smartphone-based audio systems. He leads the Statistical Signal Processing Research Laboratory and the Audio/Acoustic/Speech Research Laboratory, emphasizing real-time signal processing innovations.
Education: Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Colorado Boulder. Key roles include IEEE Senior Member, Chair of the IEEE-Dallas Signal Processing Society, and co-founder of the IEEE-Dallas EMBS Chapter.
Research Interests: Noise cancellation, signal detection, acoustic signal processing, hearing aid technology, and portable digital systems. Over $3.5M in research funding from NIH, DoD, VA, and industry partners like Texas Instruments. Collaborations span UT Southwestern, Texas Health Resources, and international institutions like Kansai University, Japan.
Awards: IEEE Fellow (2024), Bob Owens Best Student Paper Award (2016), and recognition for contributions to hearing aid technology. Supervised numerous graduate students, with over 200 publications in journals and conferences.
Labs: Statistical Signal Processing Research Laboratory and Hearing Aid Project Lab. Current projects include smartphone integration for hearing aids and machine learning-based asthma risk prediction via IoT.
