Ismail Koyuncu

Prof. Ismail Koyuncu is a Professor of Environmental Engineering at Istanbul Technical University (İTÜ), serving as Rector from 2020 to 2024. His academic journey includes a B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering from İTÜ (1990–2002), followed by postdoctoral research at Rice University (USA) in 2002–2003 and 2004 as a visiting professor. He has held roles such as Director of Research and Application Center (2014–present), Board Member of TÜBİTAK MAM (2021–present), and President of the Environmental Foundation (2010–present).

His research focuses on nanotechnology, membrane technologies, water pollution control, and clean production. He has led over 25 projects, including EU-funded initiatives like CUMERI (green membranes for industry resilience) and IDEAL (digital language education for immigrants). His work emphasizes sustainable water treatment, rare earth element recovery, and innovative membrane applications.

Koyuncu has authored 297 publications and holds numerous awards, including the ISIF Silver Medal (2024), ECO International Award (2009), and multiple doctoral thesis awards. He chairs the Turkish National Committee for Water Pollution and is a member of prestigious organizations like TÜBİA (Turkish Academy of Sciences) and the European Desalination Society.

His contributions span academic leadership, groundbreaking research in membrane science, and environmental sustainability. He has supervised 65 theses and pioneered technologies for wastewater treatment, boron removal, and sustainable resource recovery.
