Ismail-Beigi is a Professor in the Department of Applied Physics at Yale University, affiliated with the Yale Applied Physics program, the Condensed Matter Theory Group, and the Mechanical and Materials Science Department. His research focuses on condensed matter systems using first principles/ab initio electronic structure methods, particularly studying quantum mechanical many-body problems in solid-state materials. His group develops computational tools like the BoSS slave-boson code and the OpenAtom GW software for large-scale simulations.
Key research areas include oxide interfaces, 2D materials (e.g., borophene), topological insulators, and ferroelectric systems. Notable achievements include the discovery of ferroelectric ZrO₂ monolayers on silicon and the theoretical prediction of borophene growth on metal surfaces. His work bridges theory and experiment, collaborating with experimental groups to validate computational findings.
- Software: BoSS slave-boson code (2018), OpenAtom GW code (2018)
- Key Projects: Borophene synthesis, interfacial 2D electron gases, topological surface states in SnTe
Recent work (2023-2025) explores interlayer couplings in cuprates, orbital-selective charge transfer, and piezoelectric ferromagnetism in 2D materials. His group's computational methods enable virtual laboratory setups to study atomic-scale phenomena with precision.
Advising: Supervised graduate student Mehmet Dogan (record 3 papers in one month) and Sohrab. Collaborates with IBM and UIUC on parallel computing frameworks for materials science.
