Ismael Gonzalez Garcia is a Ramón y Cajal researcher at the University of Santiago de Compostela's Department of Physiology. He is affiliated with the Center for Research in Molecular Medicine and Chronic Diseases (CIMUS) and the MetaMol research group focusing on molecular metabolism, alongside the GIBIOMED biomedical research group. His doctoral thesis (2018) explored ceramides and endoplasmic reticulum stress in energy balance regulation under Prof. Carlos Dieguez Gonzalez and Miguel A. Lopez Perez.
His research focuses on hypothalamic regulation of metabolism, obesity mechanisms, and lipid signaling pathways. Key areas include ceramide-induced lipotoxicity, AMPK signaling, and the role of astrocytes in energy homeostasis. Recent work highlights neuroprotective mechanisms in cerebral ischemia, thyroid hormone effects on hepatic metabolism, and estradiol regulation of brown adipose tissue.
Publications demonstrate a strong emphasis on translational physiology, linking molecular mechanisms to whole-body metabolic outcomes. His studies often employ genetic models and advanced imaging techniques to dissect hypothalamic circuitry controlling energy balance. No scientific awards are explicitly mentioned, though his prolific publication record reflects sustained research impact.
He collaborates with multiple institutions and maintains active research groups, contributing to both basic and applied biomedical research in Spain.
