Islam Saiful is a Professor of Materials Science at the Department of Materials, University of Oxford. Previously, he held roles including Professor of Materials Chemistry & Head of Energy Materials Group at the University of Bath (2006–2021) and University Lecturer/Reader at the University of Surrey (1990–2005). His research focuses on clean energy materials, including lithium-ion batteries, solid electrolytes, perovskite solar cells, and computational modeling of materials. He has received numerous awards, such as the Royal Society Hughes Medal (2022) and Faraday Institution Community Award (2024).
- Education: PhD in Solid State Chemistry (University College London, 1988), BSc Hons Chemistry (University College London, 1984).
His research interests span electrode materials for batteries, solid-state electrolytes, and renewable energy technologies. He has secured over £5.2M in research grants, including leading a £11.1M Faraday Institution project on Li-ion cathode materials. Media engagements include BBC Radio 4’s ‘The Life Scientific’ (2019) and Royal Institution Christmas Lectures (2016).
- Awards: Over 15 major honours, including RSC Francis Bacon Medal (2008) and RSC Peter Day Award (2017).
He has organized high-impact conferences, such as the Royal Society’s 2018 ‘Energy Materials for a Low Carbon Future’ meeting. His work bridges computational modeling and experimental materials science for sustainable energy solutions.
