Dr. Ishara Dharmasena is a Senior Lecturer and RAEng Research Fellow at Loughborough University's Wolfson School of Mechanical, Electrical and Manufacturing Engineering. His work focuses on nanogenerators, smart textiles, and self-powered health monitoring technologies. He holds a PhD from the University of Surrey and a B.Sc. (Hons.) from the University of Moratuwa. He has secured over £1 million in research funding and pioneered advancements in triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) technology for wearable applications.
His qualifications include a Graduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching from the University of Surrey and professional certifications like FHEA and MIET. Key collaborations include partnerships with Regis Fabrics, MAS Holdings, and universities in Sri Lanka, the UK, and the USA.
Research interests center on overcoming TENG limitations (e.g., signal instability, wearability) to enable real-world applications in healthcare, rehabilitation, and environmental sustainability. His innovations aim to create sustainable, self-powered wearable devices for remote health monitoring, particularly benefiting global disability care and telerehabilitation.
Notable achievements include the RAEng Young Engineer of the Year (2024), Loughborough's VC Gold Pin, and over 30 peer-reviewed publications. He actively engages in STEM outreach, promoting engineering education and mentoring early-career researchers.
