Isabel Muzzio is a Professor in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences at the University of Iowa, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. She leads the Memory and Navigation Lab, where her research focuses on the biological understanding of memory, particularly examining how fear affects spatial representations in the hippocampus, the neural basis of spatial reorientation, and how sleep impacts memory consolidation.
Dr. Muzzio's educational background includes a Ph.D. from Rutgers University, completed in 1999.
Her primary research interests include:
- Effects of fear on encoding and stability of spatial representations in the dorsal and ventral hippocampus
- Strategies, representations, and circuits underlying spatial reorientation
- Effects of sleep on memory and hippocampal representations
- Cellular, molecular, and circuit mechanisms of learning and memory
- Neural circuits underlying emotional memory retrieval
Dr. Muzzio's work has significant implications for understanding neurodegenerative diseases characterized by memory loss and disorientation. Her lab employs a multi-level approach, combining single-unit recordings, calcium imaging in freely moving mice with genetic, optogenetic, chemogenetic, behavioral, and computational tools to investigate these complex neural processes.
Dr. Muzzio is affiliated with several research groups and centers at the University of Iowa:
- Behavioral & Cognitive Neuroscience training area
- Health Psychology research group
- Behavioral-Biomedical Interface Training Program
- DeLTA Center
- Iowa Neuroscience Institute
Her laboratory is housed in Spence Labs (SLP) at 214 Spence Labs, Iowa City, IA 52242, while her main office is in the Psychological and Brain Sciences Building (PBSB) at 279 PBSB, Iowa City, IA 52242.
