Isabel Leal

Isabel Leal is a Professor and Dean at ISPA - Instituto Universitário de Ciências Psicológicas, Sociais e da Vida (Lisbon, Portugal), where she also serves as Head of the Department of Clinical and Health Psychology and leads research at the William James Center for Research. With over 1,000 publications and significant research impact, she maintains active roles in multiple academic networks and research initiatives focused on psychological wellbeing across the lifespan.

Dr. Leal earned her PhD in Psychology in 1991 from the Catholic University of Louvain (Belgium). Her extensive academic background has positioned her as a leading researcher in health psychology with particular expertise in aging populations and life transitions.

Her research primarily focuses on adjustment processes at key life cycle transitions including adolescence, maternity/paternity, menopause/andropause, and aging, as well as traumatic situations like immigration, refugee experiences, and end-of-life scenarios. She also investigates gender issues, particularly public perceptions of gender equality and attitudes toward sexual minorities, examining how these factors moderate quality of life, wellbeing, and health outcomes.
