Isabel Awad Cherit

Dr. Isabel Awad Cherit is an Associate Professor in the Department of Media and Communication at Erasmus University Rotterdam's Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication. Her research focuses on democratic communication, social justice, and media inclusion/exclusion dynamics. She leads the Diversity and Inclusion theme in the Vital Cities and Citizens initiative. Awad Cherit holds a PhD from Stanford University and a background in journalism and aesthetics from Universidad Católica de Chile.

Her research explores how media systems marginalize or empower social groups, with particular attention to journalists' navigation of hegemonic media environments. Key areas include urban policy discourses, gender-inclusive language practices, and the role of civil society in fostering equitable urban development. She has published 68 research outputs and engaged in 43 academic activities since her appointment.

Recent work includes co-authoring the 'Remapping Report' on inclusive urban policies and analyzing gender-inclusive Spanish in Argentinian media. Her contributions span peer-reviewed articles, conference presentations, and public engagement through platforms like Vers Beton and web publications.
