Iris Holzer is an Assistant Teaching Professor in the Environmental Studies Program at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). She holds a Ph.D. in Soils and Biogeochemistry from UC Davis (2023) and a B.A. in Geology from Scripps College. Her research focuses on rock weathering, soil formation, and carbon dynamics in agricultural and natural systems, with a particular emphasis on enhanced rock weathering for CO2 removal and nitrogen cycling in terrestrial ecosystems. She teaches undergraduate courses in environmental chemistry and soil science, emphasizing equitable access to field experiences through cost-reduction initiatives and safety training programs. Notably, she received the UC Davis Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Mentoring Undergraduate Research in 2022. Her work bridges geology, hydrology, and ecology, with collaborations extending to nonprofits like CarbonPlan and CV-SALTS. Current projects include field safety training (e.g., FieldFutures) and advancing carbon sequestration strategies in California croplands.
Education:
- Ph.D., Soils & Biogeochemistry, UC Davis (2023)
- B.A., Geology, Scripps College (via Pomona College Geology Department)
Research Interests: Dr. Holzer’s work examines weathering processes, soil carbon dynamics, and their connections to climate systems. Key areas include:
- Enhanced rock weathering as a carbon dioxide removal tool in croplands
- Rock-derived nitrogen release in forests
- Salinity interactions in irrigated drylands
- Mineral weathering impacts on soil organic matter
Teaching & Outreach: She prioritizes inclusive, place-based learning and has secured funding for field safety training programs. Courses taught include Principles of Soil Science, Soils of California, Environmental Chemistry, and Colloquium on Environmental Studies.
Awards:
- UC Davis Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Mentoring Undergraduate Research (2022)
Labs/Teams: Collaborates with the Working Lands Innovation Center, CarbonPlan, and Formation Environmental. Active in UCSB’s Environmental Studies Program and field safety initiatives.
