Irina Mitrea is a Professor in the Department of Mathematics at Temple University, affiliated with the College of Science and Technology. Her research focuses on Harmonic Analysis, Partial Differential Equations, and related interdisciplinary areas such as Scattering Theory and Geometric Measure Theory. She has an extensive publication record with over 60 journal articles and 9 research monographs.
Her work addresses boundary value problems for elliptic systems in non-smooth domains, pioneering foundational studies on multi-layer potentials for higher-order operators. She has collaborated with experts in Validated Numerics to advance understanding of the Spectral Radius Conjecture.
Mitrea has received prestigious awards including the 2024 Temple Research Award, the 2014 Von Neumann Fellowship at the Institute for Advanced Study, and the 2008 Ruth Michler Prize. She has served as a plenary speaker at major conferences, including the American Mathematical Society Meeting (2010) and the International Conference on Harmonic Analysis and PDEs (2004).
Her professional service includes contributions to the American Mathematical Society and the Association for Women in Mathematics. Her outreach programs have engaged over 3,500 students, particularly supporting women and underrepresented groups in STEM.
