Irene Polycarpou is Chairperson and Associate Professor in Medical Physics at the Department of Health Sciences, European University Cyprus. She holds dual roles in academia and clinical practice, serving as Lecturer/Program Coordinator for Radiodiagnostics/Radiotherapy (2014–2018) and Medical Physicist at German Oncology Centre (2017–2018). Her expertise spans medical imaging technologies, particularly PET, SPECT, and their motion correction methodologies.
Education includes a Ph.D. in Imaging Sciences (King's College London, 2014), MSc in Medical Engineering and Physics (2009), and BSc in Physics (University of Cyprus, 2008). Research focuses on improving diagnostic accuracy through advanced imaging techniques, respiratory motion correction, and optimizing protocols for nuclear medicine.
Key professional roles include Vice President of the Cyprus Society of Medical Physicists (since 2015) and EFOMP Council Delegate (since 2018). She has led EU-funded projects like Sublima (FP7) and national initiatives optimizing myocardial perfusion imaging. Her work integrates clinical practice with technological innovation in radiation oncology and medical imaging systems.
Notable achievements include developing PET/MRI motion correction frameworks and evaluating diagnostic efficacy of hybrid imaging systems. Her contributions to medical physics education are reflected through EFOMP mentoring programs and cross-European workforce analysis initiatives.
