Dr. Irene Aguilera Bonet is a Group Leader at the Ab Initio Quantum Materials Group (AIQM) within the Institute for Theoretical Physics (ITFA) at the University of Amsterdam. Her work focuses on first-principles many-body methods for quantum materials, aiming to bridge theoretical predictions with experimental results.
The AIQM group, part of the Institute of Physics (IoP) and affiliated with the European Theoretical Spectroscopy Facility (ETSF) and the Dutch Research School of Theoretical Physics (DRSTP), develops advanced computational approaches beyond density functional theory (DFT) to study emergent phenomena in condensed matter. Their research targets applications in quantum technologies, with a focus on magnetic topological insulators, excitonic insulators, and topological magnons.
Current and former students under her supervision include Farhan Tanzim (GW calculations of magnetic topological insulators), Weiyi Guo (strongly-correlated topological materials), Marie Tardieux (structural and magnetic properties of TIs), Thomas Mersie (implementation of TDDFT in SPEX), Martina Piccamiglio (topological magnons in 2D CrI3), and others working on topics like optical absorption spectra, quasiparticle Fermi surfaces, and quantum anomalous Hall effects.
