Irem Ayan is an Assistant Professor of French in the Department of French, Hispanic and Italian Studies at the University of British Columbia's Faculty of Arts. Her work bridges translation studies, gender studies, and sociological approaches to interpreting practices.
Dr. Ayan's research focuses on the emotional labor of conference interpreters, examining how gendered assumptions affect performance and identity. Her book manuscript Gender, Language and Sabotage: The Emotional Labour of Conference Interpreting explores how interpreters assume different 'I' positions through emotional labor. She also leads innovative research on Indigenous language revitalization through translation, funded by an SSHRC Insight Development Grant (2023-2025).
Her publications demonstrate a strong interdisciplinary approach connecting translation theory with gender studies, emotional labor theory, and Indigenous perspectives. Current projects include challenging Western notions of translation neutrality through First Nations translators' experiences and examining the role of translation in decolonizing Arctic research.
