Ioulia Kovelman is a Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Michigan, within the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA). Her research focuses on language and reading development in monolingual and bilingual infants, children, and adults, employing behavioral and neuroimaging methods such as fMRI and fNIRS. She holds a Ph.D. from Dartmouth College.
Education: Ph.D., Dartmouth College.
Research Interests: Dr. Kovelman investigates bilingualism’s cognitive effects, including how language acquisition impacts neural networks, literacy, and attention. Her work emphasizes the role of bilingualism in fostering specialized brain functions, such as morphological awareness and phonological processing. She also explores the impact of global events (e.g., the pandemic) on language development.
Lab: Her Language & Literacy Lab uses advanced neuroimaging techniques to study developmental and atypical language processes. Collaborations span disciplines, including neuroscience, education, and biomedical engineering.
