Ioannis Chasiotis

Ioannis Chasiotis is a Professor and Associate Head of the Department of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), affiliated with the Grainger College of Engineering. He also serves as the Director of Graduate Studies. His research focuses on nanotechnology, materials science, and experimental mechanics, with affiliations to the Micro and Nanotechnology Laboratory and Mechanical Sciences and Engineering. Chasiotis holds the Caterpillar Professor of Engineering title and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Mechanics and the Society for Experimental Mechanics.

• Education: Ph.D. in Aeronautics (Caltech, 2002), M.S. in Aeronautics (Caltech, 1998), Diploma in Chemical Engineering (Aristotle University, 1996).
• Positions: UIUC Professor (2012–present), UIUC Associate Professor (2008–2012), UIUC Assistant Professor (2005–2008), University of Virginia Assistant Professor (2001–2005).

His research interests include Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), thin films, MEMS/NEMS, electrospinning, and high-fidelity 3D printing of polymers and composites. Recent work explores the mechanics of collagen fibrils, nanofiber networks, and extreme-environment materials for aerospace applications.

Awards include the F.G. Tatnall Award (2021) and recognition as a University of Illinois Scholar (2016). He has served as Editor-in-Chief of Experimental Mechanics (2016–2020) and chairs major conferences like the Gordon Research Conference on Multifunctional Materials and Structures.

• Teaching: Courses include AE 523 (Nanoscale Contact Mechanics) and AE 529 (Viscoelasticity Theory).
• Labs/Teams: Active in the Micro and Nanotechnology Laboratory and collaborates with interdisciplinary groups in materials science and mechanical engineering.
