Ioannis Bakas serves as an Associate Professor at the Department of Social Theology and Christian Culture within the School of Theology at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. His office is located in room 343 on the 3rd floor of the Theology building, where he holds weekly office hours every Wednesday from 17:30 to 19:30. Professor Bakas specializes in the historical and contemporary analysis of Orthodox Patriarchates, with particular focus on:
- History and current status of the Ecumenical Patriarchate and other ancient Patriarchates (Alexandria, Antioch, Jerusalem)
- Ecclesiastical history of Greece and the Greek-speaking world
- History of ecclesiastical administration structures
- Ecclesiastical geography and Christian topography
- Local church history across different historical periods
- History of Hellenism in its ecclesiastical, educational, and social dimensions
His scholarly publications reveal a comprehensive approach to Orthodox ecclesiastical history, spanning from early Christianity (5th century) through the Ottoman period to modern times. His work demonstrates particular expertise in the organizational structures of patriarchates, their geographical evolution, and their complex relationships with political authorities and other ecclesiastical bodies. The research shows consistent attention to administrative structures, boundary changes, and the interplay between religious institutions and cultural identity.
