Dr. Inoka Amarakoon is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Soil Science at the University of Manitoba's Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences. She is affiliated with the Fort Garry Campus and teaches courses like SOIL 4130 (Soil Chemistry and Mineralogy) and SOIL 3600 (Soils and Landscapes in Our Environment). Her research focuses on nutrient and contaminant fate in agroecosystems, including phosphorus dynamics, veterinary antibiotics, and soil remediation for agricultural sustainability.
Dr. Amarakoon holds a PhD and MSc in Soil Science from the University of Manitoba, alongside degrees from the University of Peradeniya in Sri Lanka. Her work addresses critical areas such as pipeline reclamation impacts on cropland, struvite fertilizer efficacy, and mitigating pesticide pollution.
Research interests include: transport of contaminants in manured soils, oil/gas pipeline soil health recovery, and urban garden trace element contamination. She advises three graduate students and collaborates on projects evaluating soil amendments to reduce phosphorus runoff.
Her lab focuses on interdisciplinary approaches to soil health, combining field studies with controlled experiments. Recent work highlights the long-term effects of pipeline reclamation on soil physical properties and the effectiveness of blended soil amendments in phosphorus management.
