Ingrid Murphy

Ingrid Murphy serves as Principal Lecturer at Cardiff School of Art & Design (CSAD), where she holds the position of Academic Lead for Transdisciplinarity. She integrates research and enterprise across the school's learning and teaching curricula while overseeing cross-school interdisciplinary modules. Previously, she led CSAD's ceramic department from 2008-2013 and the innovative Artist, Designer: Maker course from 2011-2016, which focused on fusing traditional craft skills with digital design and fabrication processes.

Murphy's research interests center on the intersection of ceramics and digital technology. She explores how to augment ceramic artifacts with interactive technologies while exploiting the material characteristics of ceramics to create innovative user experiences. Her work bridges traditional craft practices with contemporary digital fabrication methods, examining how these intersections can generate new forms of creative expression and audience engagement. She investigates maker culture both in educational contexts and international settings, with particular focus on China.

Murphy's publications demonstrate consistent contributions to the fields of ceramic art, digital fabrication, and interdisciplinary education. Her work shows a clear trajectory from traditional ceramic practice toward increasingly technology-integrated approaches, with growing emphasis on the pedagogical implications of maker culture and transdisciplinary practice. Murphy leads CSAD's applied research group FabCre8, focusing on digital fabrication since 2015. Her international practice includes maintaining a studio in France where she develops co-learning projects with students, demonstrating her commitment to global artistic exchange and experiential learning.

Murphy directs the FabCre8 research group which serves as CSAD's hub for digital fabrication research and practice. The group explores the integration of traditional making processes with emerging digital technologies, providing a platform for interdisciplinary collaboration across art, design, and technology fields. Her work with this group has established important international connections, particularly with maker communities in China.
