Ingrid Mertig

Prof. Dr. Ingrid Mertig is a Professor and Group Leader of the Max Planck Fellow Group at the Max Planck Institute in Halle. Her research focuses on solid-state theory, particularly parameter-free descriptions of nanostructured systems using density functional theory (DFT) formulated via Green functions. Her work explores electronic, magnetic, and transport properties at the atomic scale, with significant contributions to spintronics, including studies on giant magnetoresistance (GMR), tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR), and spin Hall/Nernst effects. The group's activities (2007–2019) were embedded in the Collaborative Research Centre 762 (Functionality of Oxide Interfaces), investigating metal-oxide and oxide-oxide interfaces to design materials with optimized functionalities.
