Ingrid Kouwijzer is a Researcher at the Faculty of Behavioural and Movement Sciences, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, affiliated with the Prevention and Rehabilitation department and AMS - Rehabilitation & Development unit. She holds ancillary roles with the Koninklijke Nederlandsche Wielren Unie (Arnhem), Union Cycliste Internationale (Aigle), and Reade (Amsterdam).
Her research focuses on spinal cord injury rehabilitation, exercise physiology in disabled populations, and adaptive sports technologies. Key areas include wheelchair ergonomics, cardiopulmonary testing protocols for spinal cord injury patients, and the psychosocial impacts of athletic training on chronic disability.
Recent work emphasizes biomechanical analysis of assistive technologies, exercise guidelines for neurologically impaired athletes, and the psychological benefits of sports participation. Her articles highlight innovative approaches to improving mobility and quality of life for individuals with physical impairments.
In addition to research, she teaches courses such as Bachelor Onderzoeksproject and Master Research Projects in Human Movement Sciences (HMS) and Medical Physiotherapy Sciences (MPS). She contributed to datasets analyzing Borg exertion scales for paraplegia/tetraplegia populations.
