Ingrid Jordt is Associate Professor of Anthropology at UWM, researching political legitimation processes and Buddhist-monastic relations in Burma/Myanmar. Fieldwork conducted since 1988 examines meditation movements and authoritarian governance.
Holds Ph.D. from Harvard University and B.A. from UC Berkeley. Research analyzes how Buddhist practices shape political authority, with focus on women's roles in religious revival and resistance. Investigates ethnographic methodologies for studying state power under authoritarian regimes.
Publications examine concepts of 'True Buddhist' identity, women's renunciation practices, and transnational Buddhism's impact on local power structures. Current work investigates Internet-mediated social movements and their influence on political discourse.
Teaching covers cultural anthropology, ethnographic methods, food systems, gender studies, and political anthropology. Field sites include Burma/Myanmar and Thailand.
