Ingmar Franken is a Full Professor at Erasmus University Rotterdam, affiliated with the Erasmus School of Social and Behavioural Sciences and the Department of Psychology, Education, and Child Studies. He leads the Center for Addiction and Substance Use Research (CESAR) in Rotterdam and is actively involved in major longitudinal studies including Generation R and GUTS. He holds a part-time clinical position as a therapist at Antes, specializing in addiction treatment.
His research centers on the neurocognitive mechanisms of addiction and substance use, adopting a 'From Lab to Society' approach to bridge experimental research with clinical applications. Key areas include impulsivity, error processing, self-control, and externalizing behaviors. He has contributed extensively to understanding addiction through EEG, behavioral tasks, and longitudinal data.
His recent scholarly work spans developmental cognitive neuroscience, decision-making, and psychopathology, with a strong emphasis on translational research. Articles highlight topics such as delay discounting, post-error processing, and social media use in emerging adults, reflecting a broad yet focused research trajectory in addiction and cognitive control.

Franken has supervised 28 PhD candidates to completion and regularly contributes to scientific discourse as a reviewer for journals and funding agencies like the European Research Council. He serves on the editorial boards of Drug and Alcohol Dependence and European Addiction Research. He is the lead editor of the SAGE Handbook of Addiction Psychology and two Dutch handbooks on psychopathology and addiction. His work also contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to mental health and well-being.
He is a core member of the GUTS consortium and part of the management team of Generation R, both large-scale studies on child and adolescent development. His dual academic and clinical roles enable a unique integration of research and practice in addiction psychology.
