Ingeborg Klarenberg is a Visiting Professor at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam's Faculty of Science, Department of Systems Ecology. Her research focuses on microbial ecology, particularly the interactions between host organisms (e.g., mosses, lichens) and their microbiomes under climate change. She has contributed to projects like the Antarctic biota count (ABC), examining biodiversity scaling in extreme environments.
Her work addresses global challenges such as climate change impacts, microbial adaptation strategies, and sustainable data practices. She received the 2024 Connected World Societal Impact Award for advancing ecological research through collaborative and inclusive approaches.
Key projects include investigating Sphagnum moss acclimation to warming and exploring subsurface life analogs for Mars in Icelandic lava tubes. She has published extensively on microbiome dynamics, bacterial communities, and field methodologies like off-grid DNA sequencing.
