Prof. Inge Hutter is a Full Professor of Participatory and Qualitative Research in Population and Development at the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS) of Erasmus University Rotterdam. She holds dual affiliations with ISS and EUR, specializing in cultural anthropology and demography with a focus on qualitative methods applied to health and cultural studies. Her research spans Asia, Africa, Latin America, and Europe, addressing topics like caregiving dynamics, cultural health systems, and intergenerational relations.
From 2015-2023, she served as Rector/Dean of ISS, and since 2021, leads initiatives on Erasmian Values (societal engagement, open-mindedness, global citizenship) within EUR's strategic goals. Her leadership training includes academic, connecting, and transformative styles, including Theory-U methodology.
Hutter co-authored Qualitative Research Methods (Sage, 2011 and 2020 editions), integrating participatory action approaches. Her work emphasizes co-created community interventions and has supervised over 20 PhD researchers globally.
Her recent research explores aging populations in emigrant households (India), sexual education in Uganda, and cultural schemas in Tanzanian caregiving. Collaborations span universities in Malawi, Ghana, Uganda, Colombia, and the Netherlands.
