Professor Inge Brinkman is a distinguished scholar of African Studies at Ghent University's Department of African Languages and Cultures, where she has served as Professor since October 2015. With a PhD from Leiden University (1996) focusing on oral and written literature, identity and gender in Central Kenya, she has developed an extensive research profile spanning multiple African regions including Central Kenya, Oromia, and Namibia/Angola.
Her research interests encompass African literature and popular culture from a cultural-historical perspective, with particular expertise in gender studies, oral narrative analysis, monster studies, and autobiographical writing in Africa. Professor Brinkman is affiliated with several research groups including the CMSI - Cultural Memory Studies Initiative, BantUGent - UGent Centre for Bantu Studies, and the Ghent Centre for Afrikaans and the Study of South Africa.

As an active academic leader, she supervises numerous research projects examining ecological knowledge in oral narratives, storytelling in crisis management, and digital restitution of cultural heritage. Her leadership extends to international collaborations and conference organization, reflecting her commitment to building scholarly networks across the global academic community.
