Dr. Inderjit Singh is a Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), affiliated with the College of Medicine. His research focuses on neurodegenerative and immune-mediated disorders, particularly multiple sclerosis (MS), adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD), and stroke. He holds a D.Sc. from Panjab University and has conducted groundbreaking work on statin therapies for neurological diseases.
Education:
- B.S. in Biochemistry, Panjab University, 1965
- M.S. in Biochemistry, Panjab University, 1967
- Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Iowa State University, 1974
- Postdoctoral Fellowship in Neurochemistry, EKS Research Center/Massachusetts General Hospital, 1976
- D.Sc. in Science, Panjab University, 2017
Research Interests: His laboratory explores cellular signaling pathways in neurodegenerative diseases, with emphasis on statins, S-nitrosoglutathione (GSNO), and AMPK modulation for therapeutic applications. Notable achievements include pioneering studies on statins' neuroprotective effects and their role in remyelination in MS and ALD.
Publications: Dr. Singh has authored over 50 peer-reviewed articles, including landmark studies on lovastatin's efficacy in MS (Lancet 2004) and the role of GSNO in vascular/immune disease mechanisms. His work bridges preclinical models with clinical trials, emphasizing translational research.
Labs/Teams: His lab at MUSC's Children’s Research Institute investigates novel therapies for neurodegenerative conditions using cell culture and animal models, with a focus on drug development for human trials.
