Dr. Imogen Marcus is a Senior Lecturer in English Language within the School of English & Creative Arts. Her research focuses on historical sociolinguistics, historical pragmatics, and corpus linguistics, with a particular emphasis on transhistorical analysis of digital language practices. She leads the Transhistorical Corpus of Written English project (2019–2021) and co-organized the 2019 conference panel on 'Bridging the gap: pragmatic perspectives on written language use in old and new media.'
Her work spans medieval to modern language shifts, including studies of anaphoric reference in Anglo-Norman letters, abbreviation practices across centuries, and code-switching in late medieval texts. Marcus is actively involved in the Linguistics Research Group and Corpus Research Group, contributing to interdisciplinary analyses of language evolution.
Marcus supervises PhD students and has published widely on historical lexical semantics and digital language dynamics. Key contributions include peer-reviewed articles in Studia Anglica Posnaniensia, English Language and Linguistics, and Journal of Historical Sociolinguistics.
