Dr. Imar de Vries is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Media and Culture Studies, University of Utrecht, specializing in Media and Performance Studies. His research focuses on historical and contemporary innovation discourses around wireless technologies, digital media, and virtual/augmented reality. He coordinates the BA program Communication and Information Studies and is a fellow of media lab SETUP, while also serving on the supervisory board of media lab Impakt.

Education & Career: After initial studies in Information and Computing Sciences (1993), de Vries shifted to Theater, Film, and Television Studies, graduating in 2002 with a thesis on virtual 3D worlds and mobile telephony. He completed his PhD in 2008 on communication desires in wireless media discourses, published as Tantalizingly Close (Amsterdam University Press).
