Ilya Somin is Professor of Law at George Mason University and holds the B. Kenneth Simon Chair in Constitutional Studies at the Cato Institute, positioning him at the intersection of academic legal scholarship and policy advocacy.
His research spans critical domains of constitutional theory with particular depth in:
- Property rights and eminent domain limitations following Kelo v. City of New London
- Migration policy as a mechanism for political freedom through 'foot voting'
- Systemic political ignorance in democratic systems
- Federalism and constraints on government power
- Constitutional challenges to state overreach
Professor Somin's influential publications include three major monographs addressing migration freedom (2022), democratic ignorance (2016), and property rights (2015). His scholarship extends beyond traditional academic venues through regular contributions to the Volokh Conspiracy blog and major media outlets including the New York Times, Washington Post, and Wall Street Journal, demonstrating exceptional public engagement. His work consistently advocates for institutional designs that protect individual liberty against governmental overreach while critically examining democratic theory's foundational assumptions.
