Ilse Marien is a postdoctoral researcher at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel within the Department of Communication Sciences, part of the Faculty of Communication Sciences. Her work focuses on digital inclusion, media studies, and urban transitions. She leads or co-leads projects like Digital Inclusion in South Africa, Urban ReLeaf, and CLIMAS, addressing topics such as citizen engagement, climate resilience, and policy design. Marien has published extensively since 2007, with notable works on banking sector inclusivity, smart city challenges, and participatory democracy. She received the Jaarprijs voor wetenschapscommunicatie (2020) for her science communication efforts. Her research integrates interdisciplinary approaches to bridge technology gaps and promote equitable urban development.
Recent projects emphasize collaboration with policymakers and citizens to create actionable solutions for digital divides and climate adaptation. She collaborates internationally, with projects in Belgium, South Africa, and Europe.
