Ilijas Farah is a Full Professor of Mathematics at York University, Toronto, and holds a position at the Mathematical Institute of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts in Belgrade, Serbia. His research focuses on applications of logic to operator algebras, particularly in set theory, model theory, and C*-algebras. He is also a Research Chair in Logic and Operator Algebras at York University.
Farah earned his BSc and MSc from Belgrade University (1988, 1992) and his PhD from the University of Toronto in 1997. His career includes roles as an NSERC Postdoctoral Fellow at York University (1997–99), Hill Assistant Professor at Rutgers University (1999–2000), and professor at the CUNY Graduate Center and College of Staten Island (2000–02). His sub-disciplines include Set Theory, Logic, and Operator Algebras.
His research interests span pure mathematics, with a focus on foundational questions in operator algebras, model theory, and set-theoretic methods applied to algebraic structures. Recent work explores quantifier elimination in von Neumann algebras, saturation properties of algebras, and embeddings of operator algebras into Roe and quasi-local algebras.
His publications from 2023–2025 highlight advancements in C*-algebra classification, dichotomy theorems, and logical properties of operator structures. Notable topics include the Calkin algebra, coarse geometry of expander graphs, and Hilbert spaces under varying axiomatic frameworks.
