Professor Ileana Steccolini is a Professor of Accounting and Director of Research at the Essex Business School (University of Essex). She previously held roles at Newcastle University and Bocconi University, and served as a visiting scholar at institutions including the University of Sydney, University of Edinburgh, and RMIT Melbourne. Her research focuses on public sector accounting, budgeting, performance management, and accountability, with emphasis on governmental financial resilience, inclusion, and gender in public services.
Her editorial roles include editor of Financial Accountability and Management, and membership on editorial boards of Public Administration Review, Accounting, Auditing and Accountability Journal, and others. She leads organizations such as the International Research Society of Public Management and chairs conferences like the EIASM Public Sector Accounting and Accountability event.
Her work bridges academic research and practical governance challenges, addressing topics like crisis management, fiscal sustainability, and participatory governance. She collaborates on initiatives including a financial resilience toolkit for local governments and studies on gender budgeting. Recent publications analyze citizen-government interaction, post-pandemic public sector reforms, and emotional dynamics in network governance.
