Ila Varma is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Toronto's Faculty of Arts and Science. She maintains her office in Room 6108 of the Bahen Centre and can be contacted at ila@math.toronto.edu. Previously, she served as an Assistant Professor at UC San Diego and was an NSF Postdoctoral Fellow at both Columbia University and Harvard University.
Dr. Varma received her PhD in September 2015 from Princeton University under the advisement of Manjul Bhargava and Richard Taylor. Her doctoral work established the foundation for her ongoing research in arithmetic statistics and number theory.
Her primary research interests focus on arithmetic statistics, particularly the asymptotics of class groups and number fields, Galois representations, and p-adic automorphic forms. She has increasingly incorporated social justice perspectives into her academic work through her concept of 'Rehumanizing mathematics' and active participation in the UofT Mathematics Department's Equity Forum. Her publications reveal a consistent trajectory of advancing our understanding of class group structures across various field extensions.
Dr. Varma's scholarly contributions have been recognized through prestigious awards including the Sloan Research Fellowship (2020-present), the Connaught Research Fund (2021-2022), and her prior status as a Fulbright Scholar to the Netherlands and NSF Postdoctoral Fellow.

As an educator, Dr. Varma has taught advanced courses including Class Field Theory, Algebraic Number Theory, and Algebra. She demonstrates commitment to inclusive pedagogy through her attention to diverse learning styles and accommodation needs. Her recent course MAT1210HF on Class Field Theory incorporated community-building elements through connections to the Junior Number Theory Seminar. Dr. Varma has also been actively involved in academic justice initiatives, notably signing the US Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel and participating in the 'Cops off Campus' movement.
