Iida Hietala is a Researcher affiliated with the Department of Management Studies at Aalto University’s School of Arts, Design and Architecture. She is part of the Learning Environments research group and focuses on interdisciplinary studies at the intersection of arts, consumer culture, and education technology. Her work engages with posthumanist theories, animal agency, and creative pedagogies.
Key research areas include arts consumption patterns, the role of non-human actors in consumer behavior (e.g., dogs as quasi-consumers), and the integration of digital fabrication tools in elementary education. She has explored topics such as ‘Quarantine Art’ communities and co-design methodologies in technology-enhanced learning environments.
Hietala has been awarded grants from institutions like the Alfred Kordelin Foundation, Foundation for Economic Education, and Kone Foundation. Recent publications (2023) highlight her focus on creative child development through arts engagement and expanding consumer theory to include non-human entities. She has also contributed to pedagogical innovations in STEM education via 3D printing studies (2020).
Her academic activities include visiting research at Copenhagen Business School and Zurich University of the Arts (2022), as well as organizing co-design workshops in educational technology. Current work bridges artistic practices, consumer culture, and posthumanist frameworks to reimagine human and non-human participation in cultural consumption.
