Igor Rudan is Chair in International Health and Molecular Medicine and Joint Director of the Centre for Global Health and the WHO Collaborating Centre at the Usher Institute, University of Edinburgh. A dual Croatian and British citizen, he has established himself as a leading figure in global health research and epidemiology with significant contributions spanning genetic studies, pandemic response, and health metrics development.
His research interests encompass a broad spectrum of global health challenges including epidemiology, genetic epidemiology, public health, health metrics, pandemic preparedness, health economics, and genome-wide association studies. He has pioneered methodological approaches such as the CHNRI methodology for setting research priorities and the EQUIST tool for prioritizing health investments.
His scholarly output demonstrates consistent focus on global health metrics, genetic epidemiology, and pandemic response. Recent publications show increasing emphasis on long-term health outcomes following COVID-19, health inequalities, and advanced genetic analysis techniques. His work bridges population health with molecular medicine, creating valuable insights for both clinical practice and health policy.
- Elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (FRSE)
- Principal's Medal Award for Outstanding Service, University of Edinburgh
- Inclusion among World's Most Influential Scientific Minds / Highly Cited Researchers (2015-2021)
- Chancellor's Award for Research, University of Edinburgh
- Honorary Ph.D. from University of Split, Croatia
Rudan has led 29 research grants totaling over GBP 30 million. His founding of the Croatian Biobank '10001 Dalmatians' in isolated island populations has contributed to the discovery of biomedical roles for more than 2,000 human genes. He has served as a consultant for WHO, UNICEF, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, World Bank, and Save the Children, significantly influencing global health policy and practice. His work with the Global Health Epidemiology Research Group has produced numerous influential estimates of disease burden worldwide.
As founder of the International Society of Global Health (2019) and co-founder of the Journal of Global Health (2011), Rudan has created important platforms for advancing global health research and practice. His leadership of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Population Health Research and Training demonstrates his commitment to building research capacity in global health.
