Igor Rapinchuk is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics at Michigan State University (MSU), where he has served since 2016. He completed his Ph.D. at Yale University in 2013 under Gregory Margulis, followed by an NSF postdoctoral fellowship and lecturing at Harvard University. His research focuses on algebra, number theory, and arithmetic geometry, particularly the arithmetic of algebraic groups over higher-dimensional fields, Galois cohomology, and abstract homomorphisms of algebraic groups.
His work is supported by NSF grant DMS-2154408 and previously by the Simons Foundation. He co-organizes the BIRS workshop Arithmetic Geometry and Algebraic Groups (25w5323) in 2025. In Spring 2025, he taught MTH 496 (Bilinear Forms and Group Representations) and MTH 919 (Number Theory II).
Key contributions include studies on algebraic groups with good reduction, unramified cohomology, division algebras, and applications of abstract homomorphisms. Rapinchuk has presented at institutions like the Institute for Advanced Study and the Banff International Research Station.
