Igal Hendel is the Ida C. Cook Professor of Economics at Northwestern University’s Weinberg College of Arts & Sciences, Department of Economics. He holds a PhD from Harvard University (1994) and has held academic positions at Princeton University, the University of Wisconsin, and Northwestern. From 2018–2022, he served as AWS Chief Economist at Amazon. His research focuses on applied microeconomics and industrial organization, particularly markets with asymmetric information and dynamic consumer behavior. He has contributed significantly to understanding health insurance markets, storable goods pricing, and consumer activism.
Educations: PhD in Economics (Harvard, 1994), M.A. and B.A. in Economics (Tel Aviv University, 1988), and exchange scholar at Yale University (1992–1993).
Research interests include: asymmetric information in insurance markets, dynamic consumer behavior, nonlinear pricing strategies, and the impact of secondary markets. His work bridges theoretical models with empirical analysis, addressing policy-relevant questions in healthcare and consumer markets.
Publications highlight his contributions to health insurance equilibria, narrow networks, and storable goods dynamics. His recent work emphasizes welfare effects of long-term health insurance contracts and reclassification risk.
