Idris Assani is a Professor in the Department of Mathematics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he has been affiliated since 1988. His office is located in Phillips Hall 305A. He completed his education in France with a Bachelor of Commerce from University Paris Dauphine (1981), followed by a Doctorat 3ème cycle (1981) and Doctorat ès Sciences (1986) in Pure Mathematics from University Paris 6. He held a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Toronto from 1986 to 1988.
His research focuses on ergodic theory, probability, harmonic analysis, and operator theory. He specializes in pointwise questions in dynamical systems, including return times phenomena and non-conventional ergodic averages, with connections to the work of H. Furstenberg and T. Gowers.
His publications consistently explore foundational aspects of ergodic theory and dynamical systems, with recent works emphasizing convergence properties of averages and probabilistic applications. Since 2002, he has organized annual NSF-supported workshops in Ergodic Theory and Dynamical Systems, fostering collaborations among young and established researchers.
He advises graduate and undergraduate students, including those pursuing PhDs, Master's degrees, and honors theses in ergodic theory. His teaching includes Real Analysis (Math 521) and Functional Analysis (Math 754) in 2023-2024.
