Ida Skarping is an Associate Professor at Lund University, Faculty of Medicine, Department of Oncology. She is affiliated with the Lund University Cancer Center (LUCC) and serves as a Research Project Participant in both Breast Cancer Prevention & Intervention and The Liquid Biopsy and Tumor Progression in Breast Cancer initiatives. Holding both MD and PhD qualifications, Dr. Skarping maintains an active research profile with numerous publications and ongoing projects.
Her primary research interests focus on neoadjuvant treatment for breast cancer patients. She investigates pathological and radiological responses to chemotherapy, specifically analyzing mammographic density changes during treatment, tumor size measurements via ultrasound, mammography and tomosynthesis, and lymph node response in the axilla. Her work aims to increase knowledge of neoadjuvant treated tumors' response to chemotherapy and identify prognostic and predictive factors. Her fingerprint analysis shows strong concentration in Breast Cancer (100%), Patient care (61%), Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy (59%), and Lymph Node assessment (27%).
Her recent publications demonstrate increasing integration of artificial intelligence in breast cancer imaging and diagnostics, with multiple 2024 publications focusing on deep learning applications, lymph node staging tools, and advanced imaging techniques like 18F-FDG-PET/CT. These works reflect a clear trend toward developing more precise diagnostic and predictive tools for personalized breast cancer treatment.
Dr. Skarping is actively involved in the academic community through conference organization and participation. She has organized multiple LUCC Breast-related seminars and workshops, including the upcoming LUCC Breast Seminar in June 2025 and the 7th Swedish Cancer Research Meeting in May 2025 where she serves as an organizer.
She currently leads research projects including 'Whole body scintigraphic evaluation of noncommunicative patients with cerebral palsy and pain of unknown origin' and 'Invasive lobular carcinoma in the breast and its association with residual cancer in re-excisions and local recurrence' (2023-2024). Her work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being, specifically in cancer research and treatment advancement.
