Ibi Reichl

Ibi Reichl is a postdoctoral academic and researcher currently serving as an Honorary Research Fellow and Visiting Researcher at the School of Media, Language and Communication Studies, University of East Anglia (UEA). She holds a PhD in Linguistics from the University of Kent (2022) and has an extensive academic background including an MA and two BAs from the University of Vienna in English, American Studies, Theatre, Film, and Media Studies.

Her research is centered on interpersonal pragmatics, exploring how meaning, social relations, rights, and obligations are negotiated in everyday and dramatic interactions. Key areas include refusals, irony, humor, conflict, and benefactive actions. She has taught widely in linguistics and communication, including pragmatics, semantics, syntax, ELF, language and gender, and media language.

The recent publications highlight a strong focus on the interactional dynamics of refusals, irony, and humor, often analyzed through conversation and discourse analysis. Her work bridges historical and contemporary data, including early modern drama and stand-up comedy, reflecting a broad methodological and thematic range.

She has collaborated on externally funded projects such as the BA/Leverhulme-funded study “When the joke misfires” and has contributed significantly to peer-reviewed journals in pragmatics and discourse studies. Her work is supported by affiliations with UEA and active scholarly engagement.
