Ianthi Maria Tsimpli is an internationally recognised Professor whose research integrates theoretical linguistics with experimental psycholinguistics to understand bilingual acquisition, language impairment, and the interfaces between syntax, semantics and pragmatics. She co-edits the Language Acquisition and Language Disorders series for John Benjamins and leads large-scale projects such as MultiLiLa exploring multilingual education in India.
Research interests:
- Bilingual first and second language acquisition across childhood
- Language disorders (SLI, DLD, autism) in bilingual populations
- Anaphora resolution and pronoun interpretation
- Cross-linguistic influence, heritage languages and language attrition
- English-medium instruction and literacy in low-resource contexts
- Executive functions, Theory of Mind and their interaction with language
Her recent work combines experimental protocols (eye-tracking, narrative analysis, elicited production) with advanced statistical modelling, often within multilingual classrooms in South Asia and the Maldives. A recurrent theme is how individual differences—age, cognitive capacity, print exposure—modulate linguistic performance in typical and atypical development.
Editorial & professional roles:
- Co-editor, Language Acquisition and Language Disorders book series (John Benjamins)
- Co-editor, 2023 volume Individual Differences in Anaphora Resolution
- Repeated contributor to EUROSLA Yearbook and flagship journals such as Linguistic Approaches to Bilingualism
Although the present source does not list institutional affiliation, grant details, or personal honours, the sheer volume and impact of her recent publications indicate continuous, full-time academic activity at professorial level.
