معرفی
Dr Ian Walmsley is a Senior Lecturer in Criminology at the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol), affiliated with the Faculty of Health and Applied Sciences (HAS). He holds a BA and PhD in Sociology from UWE Bristol, with his research focusing on the historical and sociological dimensions of drug policy, addiction treatment, and recovery processes.
His academic work spans critical analyses of drug policy, the embodied experience of addiction, and policing strategies. Notably, he has explored the historical construction of the 'addicted body' as a poisoned object, influencing modern detoxification practices. Current research investigates the stigma surrounding drug use disclosure in recovery contexts, funded by the British Academy.
Walmsley has conducted commissioned evaluations for law enforcement agencies, including studies on out-of-court disposals for minor offenses and initiatives to improve police-youth relations. His work bridges historical analysis, policy critique, and qualitative methodologies to address systemic challenges in drug treatment and criminal justice.
His publications span over a decade, consistently addressing themes of governance, embodiment, and marginalization in drug-related contexts. Key areas include decriminalization debates, the impact of stigmatizing language, and the intersection of policing and public health.
