Ian Thompson is an Associate Professor of English Education at the University of Oxford's Department of Education, affiliated with St Hugh's College. He leads the PGCE English course and directs the Oxford Centre for Sociocultural and Activity Theory Research (OSAT). As a part of his role, he supervises DPhil students and co-leads a £2.55 million ESRC-funded project on school exclusion's political economies. Thompson holds a PhD in Education from the University of Bristol (2010) and has 16 years of secondary school teaching experience.
His research focuses on sociocultural theory (Vygotskian frameworks), teacher education, and systemic inequities in education, particularly school exclusion and poverty's impact. He co-authored Practical Theorising in Teacher Education (2022) and edited volumes on teacher education policy and poverty in UK schools. Thompson is Vice-President of the International Society for Cultural-Historical Activity Research.
Recent work analyzes exclusion's long-term effects on health, labor markets, and policy disparities across the UK. His projects include comparative studies of exclusion rates, the role of school design in inclusion, and interventions for disengaged youth. He collaborates internationally on teacher quality in Bhutan and displacement impacts in Ukraine.
Thompson's advisory roles include the ESRC-funded Excluded Lives project and the BERA Commission on Poverty and Policy. He teaches on the MSc in Learning and Teaching and mentors doctoral candidates researching exclusion, pedagogy, and sociocultural theory.
