Ian Stockwell is an Associate Professor in the Department of Information Systems at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), and holds roles as Associate Director for Healthcare Research and COEIT Liaison to The Hilltop Institute. He also serves as adjunct faculty at the Erickson School of Aging Studies. A UMBC alum with degrees in Information Systems, Financial Economics, Economic Policy Analysis, and Public Policy, his research focuses on applying predictive models to optimize healthcare systems, particularly for vulnerable populations. His work bridges academic and real-world applications, emphasizing collaborative projects that translate research into actionable solutions.
Stockwell’s academic journey includes over 20 years in healthcare operations, specializing in quantitative analysis of healthcare data and public health interventions. He teaches courses like IS 460/660 – Health Informatics 1, prioritizing student interaction and collaborative learning. His research interests span Medicaid/Medicare analysis, nursing home outcomes, social determinants of health, and equitable healthcare resource allocation. Notably, he has contributed to policy initiatives such as Maryland’s Community First Choice program and Medicaid waiver programs addressing housing-related social needs.
His recent publications (2023–2025) highlight trends in predictive modeling for healthcare interventions, nursing home quality metrics, and addressing disparities through data-driven approaches. He stresses the importance of real-world implementation, stating that research should inform practical solutions for healthcare challenges. Beyond academia, he advocates for interdisciplinary collaboration and community engagement to enhance healthcare equity.
