Ian Smith

Ian Smith is a Senior Lecturer in Economics at the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol), affiliated with the Department of Accounting, Economics, and Finance. He leads the Business Management and Economics program and collaborates with institutions such as the University of Rovira i Virgili, University of Leuven, University of Tours, and Griffith University.

Research Interests: His work focuses on regional economics, spatial policy, and climate change adaptation. He explores how public spending on health, education, and local services affects inequality, participatory governance, and the translation of sustainability principles into planning policies across Europe.

Teaching: Specializes in research methodology, applied economics, and research methods and design.

• Qualifications: MEng from Southampton, MA and PhD from Sheffield

Key Expertise: Spatial policy evaluation, secondary data analysis, sub-regional economic development, and neighborhood-based climate change adaptation.

Projects: Involved in the SELFCITY tri-national project on environmental collective action, COHSMO collaboration under Europe 2020, and ESPON-funded research on inter-regional mobility and small towns' role in regional economies.
